On August 21, 2026, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance reached a $400 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve allegations of violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The lawsuit was filed by the Biden administration in 2024, accusing TikTok of allowing millions of children under 13 to use the platform and collecting their personal information without parental consent. In addition to paying compensation, the settlement also included strengthening age-related controls, enhancing child protection measures, and giving parents more control over their data, but without admitting any wrongdoing. Previously, TikTok had already paid $5.7 million as part of a settlement for violations involving Musical.ly. Recently, TikTok has also faced controversy over the experimental shutdown of its algorithm security mechanisms, which has sparked questions from lawmakers.
