Anthropic withdrew from the U.S. chip export control committee and terminated its $6 billion acquisition plan for Decart.
On September 8, 2026, artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced two major changes. First, due to its opposition to legislation restricting foreign access to US chips, Anthropic officially withdrew from the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI). The council had previously attempted to remove three export control bills from the annual defense policy bill, including the “AI OVERWATCH Bill” which required a review period for the export of sensitive dual-use chips. Although Anthropic supported these bills, its stance contradicted that of the ITI, so the company decided to terminate its membership. Second, Anthropic announced it would abandon its plan to acquire Decart for $6 billion. Decart had previously made an offer to Anthropic, but the two parties failed to reach an agreement on the terms of the transaction, resulting in the termination of the process.
