French President Emmanuel Macron urged the European Commission to support legislation banning the use of social media by children under 15 years old. Previously, similar bans proposed in France failed to be implemented due to a veto by the Constitutional Council, which argued that such measures violated freedom of expression and had an overly broad scope. In his letter, Macron pointed out issues such as addictive design of social media, insufficient security for accounts of minors, and pornographic content, and advocated for unified laws among member countries. Despite difficulties such as the approaching general elections, France still plans to pursue reforms that meet constitutional requirements. Australia has already implemented similar bans, and countries like Greece and Germany have also expressed interest. However, determining the scope of the blacklist, implementing online age verification, and preventing children from bypassing restrictions remain regulatory challenges.
