On September 5, 2026, the free software app store F-Droid announced that it would consider adopting the same generative AI usage policy as the Debian project. In the previous week, the Debian project voted to adopt a policy that allows the responsible use of generative AI tools in software development, maintenance, and documentation, without opposing or supporting their use. However, it emphasized that the responsible use of such tools could significantly improve contributor efficiency. Currently, F-Droid’s policy proposal directly copies the complete policy text of Debian, with only the organizational name being replaced from ‘Debian’ to ‘F-Droid’.
F-Droid is considering adopting the same AI policy as Debian. A week ago, the Debian project voted to allow responsible use of generative AI, stating that it neither opposes nor supports the use of generative AI tools in the development and maintenance of software, packages, documentation, etc., but recognizes that responsible use of AI tools can significantly improve contributor efficiency. Now, F-Droid, the Android free software store, is considering adopting the same AI policy as Debian. Its policy proposal directly copies Debian’s full policy, simply replacing Debian’s name with F-Droid.
