On September 8, 2026, the Position Paper Track at the NeurIPS conference rejected 18.4% of the 178 submissions using proprietary AI detectors for pangrams. This process was not subject to manual review and there was no appeal mechanism. After the conference adjusted the detection parameters, the acceptance rate dropped to 12.7%, but 22 papers still were rejected despite claiming that no AI was used due to excessive scores. Independent tests showed that all papers, including those submitted by the three conference chairs, were marked as likely to be generated by AI (24%-69%). Although Stanford research indicated that ESL researchers were susceptible to misjudgments, and those affected could switch to ICLR or ICML by September 25, the conference did not release calibration data for demographic characteristics.
