Instagram adjusts AI tags: unmarked virtual characters may face content restrictions
On August 31, Instagram announced that it would rename the “AI Creator” tag to “AI-generated profile”, and stipulated that if accounts displayed AI-generated characters without proper labeling, their content might have reduced chances of being recommended. This adjustment primarily applied to accounts whose main content consisted of AI-generated characters, aiming to improve users’ ability to identify AI-generated identities; accounts that used only AI tools for creative purposes did not need to add this tag. Meanwhile, TikTok, YouTube, and several domestic platforms are also promoting mechanisms for labeling AI-generated content. TikTok requires labeling content that is entirely generated by AI or has been significantly modified, while YouTube manages videos that have strong authenticity but were generated by AI. In China, the “Regulations on Labeling AI-generated Synthetic Content” explicitly requires improving the labeling mechanism, and mainstream platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou are implementing technical identification and review standards for AI-generated content.
