In September 2026, the State Administration for Market Regulation approved and issued the “Calibration Specification for Infant Phototherapy Equipment”. This is the first national standard for metrological calibration of neonatal jaundice phototherapy equipment. The specification specifies key metrological characteristics such as irradiance and spectral distribution, as well as calibration methods, aiming to improve the safety and accuracy of phototherapy for full-term and premature infants among approximately 8 million newborns in China. After implementation, it will establish a unified quality control “scale” across the country, preventing ineffective treatment or skin and eye damage caused by deviations in equipment parameters, and helping to reduce the risk of serious complications such as bilirubin encephalopathy.
