Meta agreed to implement a series of restrictions on minors’ access to its Instagram and Facebook applications in the $18 billion settlement deal regarding child safety in 29 U.S. states. These protective measures will automatically apply to minor users in participating states, and most of them will last for 10 years. Key changes include: a cumulative two-hour daily limit for teenagers across both platforms, which can only be lifted with parental permission; the default activation of non-personalized news feeds; mandatory entry into “night mode” between midnight and 6 a.m. and blocking of access; pop-up alerts after each 15-minute continuous use, with a total time limit of 60 minutes; default hiding of the number of likes and comments; default silencing of notifications during school hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.); and prohibition of using extreme makeup filters.
