“Shanxi’s proven coalbed methane reserves exceeded 1 trillion cubic meters for the first time”
The proven reserves of coalbed methane in Shanxi exceeded 1 trillion cubic meters for the first time. According to the “Achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan and Prospects for the 15th Five-Year Plan of Unconventional Natural Gas in Shanxi” released by the Shanxi Provincial Department of Natural Resources, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Shanxi’s proven reserves of coalbed methane increased by 563.838 billion cubic meters, and the total proven reserves exceeded 1 trillion cubic meters, ranking first in the country. Coalbed methane, commonly known as “gas,” is unconventional natural gas derived from coal seams, with methane as its main component. Its calorific value is 1 to 4 times higher than that of conventional coal, and its combustion produces almost no waste gases, making it important for reducing gas accidents in coal mines, expanding natural gas supply, and reducing environmental pollution. In recent years, Shanxi has continuously increased support for technological innovation and research investment in the exploration and development of coalbed methane. With the Qinshui Basin and the eastern edge of the Ordos Basin as the core areas, it has coordinated the exploration and development of coalbed methane, pipeline storage and transportation, consumption and utilization, and industrial construction, basically establishing the largest coalbed methane production base in the country. In the first half of this year, Shanxi’s total output of coalbed methane reached 78.9 billion cubic meters, accounting for approximately 81% of the national output during the same period. Currently, there are 98 mining rights for coalbed methane in the province, with a total area of about 2…
