Microsoft optimized the shutdown and restart logic in Win11: Updates are no longer forced to be installed
Microsoft released Windows 11 optional update KB5120998 on August 27, 2026, optimizing the shutdown and restart logic to address issues with forced updates. This update clearly distinguishes between “shutdown,” “restart,” and “update and shutdown/restart” operations, installing pending updates only when users actively choose the latter. This feature was previously tested in the preview version Build 26300.8289 in April and will be officially rolled out through cumulative updates on September 8. Starting from July 28, Microsoft has integrated driver, .NET, firmware, and security updates, and improved the sleep logic to ensure that devices automatically return to sleep after the update is completed.
