The U.S. Department of Defense plans to provide $174 million to Alcoa to support the construction of a new gallium production plant at its Wodjurup alumina refinery in Western Australia. Construction began in July, and the plant is expected to produce 100 tons of gallium per year, sufficient to meet up to 10% of global demand for gallium. The Japan Metal and Energy Security Organization (JOGMEC) and Sojitz Corporation of Japan will also participate in this project.
