The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center of the United States, among others, invested $5.5 million in General Atomics Aviation Systems to establish a database on high-strength aluminum alloy materials technology.
America Makes and NCDMM invested $5.5 million to support the GOTHAAM project, led by GA-ASI, which focuses on the generation of technical data for high-strength aluminum alloy materials. The project aims to develop corrosion-resistant aviation-grade aluminum alloys with similar properties to 7075-T73 aluminum alloy. A database of allowable material values for small, medium, and large-scale laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) equipment will be established to facilitate large-scale production in both defense and commercial aviation. Once this database is completed, it will significantly shorten the time from material selection to mass production for new models, making it of long-term strategic importance for the aerospace and defense manufacturing industries.
