On September 8, 2026, the open-source media server Jellyfin officially released version 12.0 stable. This version removed the ‘10.’ prefix that had been used for eight years, unifying the version number to 12.0.0, and adjusting the frequency of major updates to once a year. Key improvements include rewriting the media library database to improve performance, storing playlist items separately; native support for books and comics, allowing direct reading of metadata files and abandoning existing plugins. Additionally, the multi-version tracking feature for series was extended to TV shows, the transcoding backend was updated to FFmpeg 8.1, the interface was fully modernized (Modern became the default layout), and security and compatibility issues such as asynchronous audio and video, path traversal, and cross-site scripting attacks were fixed.
