Wayve and Uber steal a march on Waymo with paid self-driving London rides

Wayve and Uber have partnered to launch a paid autonomous driving service in London with Wayve AI drivers. The first batch of vehicles used are Ford Mustangs. Later, a new model based on the Nissan Leaf will be introduced, featuring a more natively integrated NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion sensor system. The Leaf will initially operate in Tokyo. This service began in London in 2024, and currently, vehicles are deployed in 12 markets worldwide. Due to being in a regulated phase, each vehicle requires a private hired driver holding a TfL license to supervise it, aiming to optimize technology through paid passenger data. An updated version is expected to be available next year, depending on technological and regulatory progress. Wayve was founded in 2017, and since 2018, it has been training its AI technology on London roads.
