On August 29, 2026, Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, and several other music publishers filed a lawsuit against Anthropic and its co-founders Dario Amodei and Benedict Mann in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The plaintiffs alleged that Anthropic used thousands of copyrighted musical works to train its Claude large language model, constituting “obvious infringement of intellectual property rights.” The methods included illegal torrenting, scraping, and downloading millions of books containing lyrics and musical scores. Previously, the same law firm had represented Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group in lawsuits against Anthropic, and in the case Bartz v. Anthropic, Anthropic was ordered to pay $1.5 billion in compensation for obtaining content through pirating. A spokesperson for Anthropic responded by stating that they did not agree with the allegations and would actively respond to the lawsuit.
