Pig Kidneys Yield ‘Life-Changing’ Independence From Dialysis

A team from the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh used gene editing technology to successfully cultivate humanized kidney tissue in pigs that has the ability to filter blood. This research achieved this by combining human cells with pig embryonic stem cells, enabling the extraction of functional organs from pig kidneys that can replace dialysis treatment. This breakthrough provides new possibilities for patients with renal failure to escape long-term dependence on dialysis, potentially allowing them to achieve health and independence. Currently, this technology is still in its early stages and has not yet entered clinical trials.
