On August 26, 2026, the U.S. Cyber Security Agency (CISA) confirmed that hackers launched a cyberattack against over 100 connected U.S. water and wastewater systems in July. The attack utilized scripts developed using artificial intelligence, targeting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from manufacturers such as Rockwell, Schneider Electric, and Siemens. Although the intrusion did not cause substantial damage to local water supply, it resulted in power outages in some areas and triggered emergency responses. U.S. intelligence agencies believe that Iran may have launched this opportunistic attack as retaliation for the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, although a definitive attribution has not been established. Additionally, Chinese hackers are accused of embedding destructive malicious code in critical infrastructure, and Russia has also been linked to network operations targeting European water and energy grids and NATO allies.
