Just like a fruit fly, a new algorithm never forgets old scents
Researchers developed a new algorithm called Spi-Fly, aimed at simulating the olfactory memory mechanism in fruit flies. This algorithm was proposed by Kevin Max and Yang Shen from Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, and the related paper has been published in the journal *Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering*. Fruit flies possess approximately 140,000 neurons, enabling them to process various odors in a very short time and retain memories for a long period. Their performance exceeds that of current electronic nose devices on the market. Existing electronic noses are usually expensive, have a limited detection range, and quickly forget old odors after learning new ones.
