Matt Clifford, chairman of the UK Advanced Research and Innovation Agency (ARIA), announced his resignation on September 7, 2026. Previously, he planned to continue serving as chairman of ARIA while also holding the position of director of international affairs at Anthropic. However, this move raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Chi Onura, chair of the UK House of Commons’ Committee on Science, Innovation, and Technology, pointed out that there was an “obvious conflict of interest” in this arrangement and welcomed Clifford’s resignation. She also demanded that the government clarify the approval process for the original appointment and details of risk assessment. Clifford was involved in establishing the Advanced Artificial Intelligence Task Force, the UK Artificial Intelligence Safety Summit in 2023, and drafting the government’s action plan on artificial intelligence opportunities.
