Nepal believes that major carbon-emitting countries should compensate it for the losses it has suffered due to climate change.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Kanar said that the mudslide disaster in Nepal was not just an ordinary flood; its scale was comparable to a tsunami. He believed that the rapid melting of glaciers was a consequence of global warming and climate change, but Nepal was not the cause of this change. Foreign Minister Kanar pointed out that China is the largest carbon emitter in the world, followed by the United States and India. These countries have historical responsibilities and should compensate vulnerable countries like Nepal. Nepal’s climate advocates, Rasm, believe that against the backdrop of climate change, Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries, yet it is also one of those that attach great importance to climate and environmental issues. Nepalese officials have applied to the United Nations for emergency assistance for “loss and damage” funds. International climate advocacy organizations have also called on industrial powers to provide more active support.
