Meta smart glasses raise concerns among US law enforcement agencies: they may be used for secret surveillance and terrorist reconnaissance

In January, the counterterrorism department of the New York City Police Department issued a memo warning that Ray-Bon Meta smart glasses could be used for covert monitoring of law enforcement facilities and target reconnaissance before terrorist attacks. The device is disguised as ordinary glasses, with an LED indicator light that flashes during recording and cannot be turned off at one corner of the frame. The document stated that some arrested individuals used such devices to film inside detention centers and leak security information, and even assist in violent terrorist activities or pre-attack reconnaissance. Law enforcement agencies across the United States, the Department of Homeland Security Fusion Center, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have all issued warnings prohibiting employees from wearing smart glasses to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. Meta responded that its devices are designed to indicate to users that they are in use through the indicator lights.
