On September 8, 2026, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the launch of a new feature called Project Opal, aimed at automating complex long-term tasks in a controlled and secure environment within Microsoft 365 Copilot. This feature allows users to simply specify their objectives, and the AI agent can work continuously for hours or even days, automatically completing tasks such as material filtering, data processing, document generation, and result sharing. In a demonstration, the system analyzed outdoor footage and produced selected videos, organized species labels and date information into spreadsheets, and finally generated PowerPoint presentations that could be shared with colleagues via Teams. This feature receives instructions through the Frontier module, and the reasoning model schedules the browser to execute tasks on dedicated Windows 365 Cloud PCs. Currently, early applications of Project Opal include quarterly compliance audits, group member applications, and new employee onboarding.
