On September 8, 2026, Zhipu AI officially released the GLM-5.3 model and changed its license from MIT to custom terms. The new terms stipulate that if a user or their affiliated company generates total revenue from the model’s services exceeding $10 billion within any consecutive 12 months, it must pass Z.AI’s security review before using the model for commercial purposes. The definition of “affiliated parties” in these terms is unclear, and the review criteria are not specified, which may create barriers to adoption. Previously, GLM-5.3 was released as a free model on platforms such as OpenRouter under the name “Ox-Alpha”. During the same period, Motif-Technologies released Motif-3 (with MIT license), dots-studio released dots3-note-prev, Qwen released the preview version of Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (using the GDN and sparse attention architecture), and Tencent also released Hy4-preview.
