The rise of "context engineering"

On August 25, 2026, LangChain Blog published an article introducing the concept of “context engineering”. The article pointed out that as the capabilities of large language models improve, relying solely on prompts is no longer sufficient to handle complex tasks. More systematic methods are needed to preprocess, recompose, and optimize input data. It was emphasized that “context engineering” aims to improve the performance and stability of models in long-text processing, multi-step reasoning, and specialized applications by using structured strategies to manage the context window of models, including information filtering, redundancy removal, and key information enhancement.
