In 2024, US telecom operator T-Mobile physically removed the Chinese hacking group “Yan Tai Feng” from its network. The group was identified as being supported by the Chinese government and aimed at stealing customer data and information on senior US government officials. It had previously attacked companies such as AT&T and Verizon. Jeff Simon, head of T-Mobile’s cybersecurity department, said that after several months of investigation, the team identified the source of the abnormal behavior. They then went to the data center in Bellevue, Washington, and cut the cables connecting to the compromised system with scissors, thereby blocking external access.
