Uber lays off 3,300 employees
Uber announced the layoff of 3,300 employees, approximately 10% of its global workforce, making it the largest restructuring since May 2020. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the decision via internal email, aiming to streamline management and reduce costs, rather than using AI as a reason. Specific plans include laying off 20% of management staff, reducing the number of employees reporting to the CEO by seven levels or more by 20%, and cutting the number of teams with only one or two members by 50%. Additionally, Uber will merge its engineering, scientific, and delivery departments, integrate the delivery operations of its food service, retail, and direct sales departments, and eliminate remote work positions, as currently less than 1% of employees are allowed to work remotely.
