The American social app Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million (approximately $35.1 million) to resolve a British class action lawsuit alleging that it shared personal data, including users’ HIV status, with third parties. The lawsuit was filed by Austen Hays Law Firm in April 2024, based on a 2018 study by SINTEF indicating that Grindr had shared sensitive user data with data collection companies Localytics and Apptimize. According to the Form 8-K document released by Grindr, the company will pay the compensation in two installments of £13 million each, due by December 31, 2026, and March 31, 2027. The settlement agreement does not include any acknowledgment of responsibility; Grindr argues that its disputed activities mainly occurred before 2020 (when it was controlled by Kunlun), and emphasizes that its privacy procedures have been fully upgraded since 2020.
