The startup CivilGrid, founded by former PG&E engineer Josh Mackanic, received a Series A financing of $26 million in August 2026, led by Spark Capital. The company aims to address the issue of missing underground utility data in the United States. By integrating scattered asset, property rights, and environmental regulation data, it seeks to create a platform similar to ‘underground Google Maps’ and sell access rights to governments, engineering companies, and utility companies. So far, CivilGrid has helped PG&E identify $60 million in avoidable road construction costs across 1,600 gas distribution projects and plans to further simplify the approval processes in U.S. infrastructure construction through automated processes.
