The United States Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Administration (ATF) announced that its independent system was attacked by a cyberattack, which was classified as a “serious incident” and required notification to Congress. The attack was carried out by the Green Lantern ransomware group, involving computer information related to investigation targets. According to federal law, agencies must disclose such cyberattacks that may pose a threat to national security or broader interests to Congress within one week of discovering them. Previously, in 2023, the Department of Justice announced a similar incident due to a ransomware attack on the Marshall Service system, and earlier this year, the FBI system was compromised, leading to the disclosure of monitoring target phone numbers.
