Apple recently obtained a patent titled “Stretchable Display” (number US-12730478-B2), aimed at developing a rollable mobile phone solution distinct from the foldable iPhone. The patent document consists of 21 pages with 12 images, and more than 50 engineers have signed it. The core of the technical solution lies in using multiple “sealed rigid pixel islands” to connect the OLED layers with flexible interconnect areas, allowing the light-emitting materials to be stretched without repeated stretching, thereby reducing the risk of damage. This enables the screen to extend as the device’s surface bends, without changing the body size, and supports cylindrical, curved, and other shapes to achieve a more continuous display area. The scope of applications listed in the patent text includes several categories of devices such as laptops, cellular phones, watches, headphones, and car displays.
