Rivian has released the RivianOS 2 vehicle operating system update for its eligible R1 and R2 models. This is the largest software upgrade for in-vehicle systems since the first models were launched. This version introduces a redesigned user interface, a real-time 3D vehicle environment based on Unreal Engine 5, and “hybrid edge computing” AI capabilities. The R2 and second-generation R1 models use Unreal Engine 5 to generate 3D scenes, while the first-generation R1 continues to use Unreal Engine 4 due to hardware limitations. The system includes new quick-control buttons, reorganized settings menus, and global search functionality; navigation features include “Real-Time Route Alerts” that display police activities and speed-camera information. AI capabilities support local task processing to reduce latency, allowing drivers to control wake-up words, location data sharing, and personal profile storage.
